Alexis wins it late for Barca

Alexis Sanchez came off the bench to score a late winner as Barcelona defeated Sevilla 3-2 at the Camp Nou on Saturday night to maintain their place at the top of the La Liga standings.

Dani Alves and Lionel Messi gave Barcelona a comfortable lead with 15 minutes to spare, but Sevilla responded through late goals from Ivan Rakitic and Coke before Alexis stole maximum points at the death.

The Catalans dominated from the onset with Neymar causing plenty of problems but the Brazilian was denied by good saves from Beto in the third as well as eight minutes.

Gerardo Martino’s side were dealt a blow in the 13th minute when they were forced to make a substitution when fullback Jordi Alba hobbled off the field to be replaced by Adriano Correia.

The Brazilian fullback made his presence felt in the 36th minute when delivered a cross into the far post for his compatriot Alves to head into the back of the net.

The visitors could’ve leveled matters just two minutes later when Victor Machin broke the offside trap, but he fired his tame shot straight at Victor Valdes.

Sevilla thought they had equalised in the 63rd minute when Juan Cala headed home from Rakitic’s corner, but the goal was ruled out as the referee adjudged that Valdes had been fouled.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 75th minutes when Neymar collected a pass from Cesc Fabregas before finding Messi, who then completed the move with a left-footed finish.

Sevilla pulled one goal back five minutes later when Rakitic smashed his low shot past Valdes following some good work from Victor on the left.

Unai Emery’s side then found their equaliser in the 90th minute with Coke sidefooting home from Rakitic’s corner after he was given too much room by the Barca defence.

However, it was the home side who had the last laugh when Alexis scored the winner in the fourth minute off added time, rifling the ball home from the run following a great run and cutback from Messi.
