Algeria suffered a 1-0 defeat to Qatar in Doha on Thursday, in the first friendly of their FIFA window’s Asian tour.
The winner was scored by Ali Assed just past the half-an-hour mark.
Qatar had the first real chance of the game after eight minutes of play, when Mohamed Mountari found his way past Carl Medjani before unleashing a powerful strike that flew just above Doukha’s cross-bar.
The locals came even closer in the 27th minute with Ismaïl Mohamed hitting the woodwork, but Djamel Belmadi’s men had their efforts ultimately rewarded five minutes later, thanks to Ali Assed who sent the ball past Azzedine Doukha to give his side a deserved lead.
And very well organised on the pitch, the locals managed to hold onto their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
It is a big disappointment for the ‘Fennecs’, who struggled to take control of the ball and create good chances.
However, centre-back Farouk Chafai, winger Rachid Ghezzal and striker Youcef Belaïli took the opportunity to earn their first international cap for their country.
Christian Gourcuff’s men on Monday will try to bounce back on the same ground against Oman, who enjoyed a bit earlier a 6-0 thrashing of Malaysia.
