Guinea Bissau held Liberia to a 1-1 stalemate in a 2018 World Cup first round, first-leg qualifier at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia on Thursday evening.

Having jumped a massive 65 places in the latest FIFA world rankings following a 1-0 home win over Tunisia last month, the hosts were confident of brushing aside a team ranked 52 places below them.

The Lone Stars named an attacking starting XI, with James Debbah's troops eager to do the job at home, but will now have everything to do in the away-leg in Bissau on Tuesday.

Spain-based striker William Jebor put the hosts in front from the penalty spot on 36 minutes, a lead they held heading into the break.

'Djurtus', though, held their own and pulled level three minutes after the hour mark - Malado Reld Anido with the important away goal.

Liberia pushed forward for the winner, but Guinea Bissau held firm and will now be favourites to book a clash with reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions Ivory Coast in the next round.
