The Harambee Stars of Kenya claimed a 1-0 victory over Cape Verde in their 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifier first leg encounter held at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on Friday afternoon.
A first half goal by Michael Olunga gave Bobby Williamson’s men the advantage heading to the second leg, as he netted early on, just 10 minutes into the contest.
Although both camps made their moves and attacked each other, their attempts failed to yield results as the score remained unchanged.
At half time, it was the hosts who went to tunnel enjoying the lead courtesy of Thika FC striker Olunga's early goal.
The opening stages of the second half wouldn’t allow the sides to create something out of the tie and with five minutes remaining on the clock Johanna Omollo’s header was off target after a beautiful delivery from the right flank.
In an aim to salvage a point for the visitors, Marco Soares tried a shot from the D-line but it was blocked by the Kenyan defence.
In the injury time, Olunga’s decision making in the box let him down as he wasted a great chance: he tried to pass the ball but it went straight to the defender and the visitors cleared the danger.
In the dying minutes of the encounter, Harambee Stars managed to hold on to their slender lead and raised their hopes of making it to the group stages as they emerged victorious.
The return leg is set for Tuesday, November 17, at Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde in Praia where coach Rui Aguas and his charges will hope to avenge the defeat.
