Zesco United caused an upset when they defeated Al Ahly 3-2 in the 2016 CAF Champions League Group A match played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday afternoon.
As a result the Zambian side started their Champions League group stage campaign with an impressive win over the Egyptian side.
Zega Mambo goalkeeper Lameck Nyangu denied Ahly an early goal when he stopped Moamen Zakaria’s well-taken effort from a free-kick in the sixth minute.
At the other end, Clatous Chama forced a save out of Ahly’s experienced shot-stopper Sherif Ekramy with a good attempt as Zesco searched for an opener.
But the crowd didn’t have to wait long for Zesco to score as John Chingandu put his side into the lead with a good finish in the 27th minute.
However, John Antwi scored for Ahly three minutes later to ensure that the first-half ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
Zega Mambo began the second-half brightly netting two goals in the first ten minutes through Chama who beat Ekramy twice.
Ghanaian striker Antwi pulled one back for the Red Devils in the 67th minute as the visitors looked to fight back and win the match.
Nevertheless, Zega Mambo stood firm at the back in the late stages of the game and ultimately, Zesco won 3-2 against the eight-time African champions.
