Wydad Casablanca recorded a comfortable 2-0 win over Zesco United in the CAF Champions League match played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Thursday morning.
The Moroccan giants climbed to the top of the Group log following their win, while Zambian outfit Zesco slipped down to third spot.
Zega Mambo enjoyed equal ball possession with the hosts in the first ten minutes of the Group A encounter.
But Rouges et Blancs did break the deadlock through Walid El Karti who placed his header into the back of the net in the 11th minute.
The visitors had an opportunity to level matters on the half-hour mark when Misheck Chaila was fouled near the box, but they could not hit the target.
Wydad nearly doubled their lead on the strong of half-time, but Salaheddine Saidi headed the ball over the crossbar and he was ruled offside.
It was soon 2-0 to the home side five minutes into the second-half when Zesco failed to deal with a cross and they netted an own goal through David Owino.
In the 64th minute, the goalscorer of the first goal El Karti was replaced by French-Moroccan player Jamel Aït Ben Idir.
John Chingandu's header went wide of the target eight minutes later following a great cross from Mwape Mwelwa as the visitors searched for a goal.
Wydad shot-stopper Wydad goalkeeper Zouheir Laaroub easily saved Zesco midfielder Clatus Chama's shot in the 77th minute.
Despite late attacks from the visitors, Wydad stood firm at the back and ultimately, they emerged 2-0 winners on the night.
