Al Ahly and Zesco United played to a 2-2 draw in the CAF Champions League Group A game played at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria on Friday night.
Zambian outfit Zesco climbed to the top of Group A standings following the stalemate, while Egyptian side Ahly also moved up to position three.
Zesco began the match brightly and they snatched an early goal in the sixth minute through their Kenyan striker Jesse Were.
The home side then pressed Zesco for the equalizing goal and in the 23rd minute, Ali Maaloul placed his free-kick inches wide of the target.
Two minutes later, Ahly captain Hossam Ghaly unleashed a shot from inside the Zesco box and it missed the goal-posts.
The equalizing goal did come on the half-hour mark and it was Ramy Rabia who netted his second goal in as many Group A games to make it 1-1.
But the Ahly defence was caught napping again by Were who dribbled past his marker before scoring to make it 2-1 to Zesco.
Ahly pressed the visitors for another equalizing goal, but Zesco stood firm at the back and ultimately, the match referee blew the half-time whistle.
Just three minutes after the restart, Ahly centre forward Amr Gamal unleashed a shot from range which sailed over the crossbar.
Hussein El-Said also tried his luck from range towards the hour-mark as the home side continued to dominate the group encounter.
The visitors were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Ahly box in the 76th minute and Jackson Mwanza then placed his attempt over the crossbar.
However, it was soon 2-2 after Emad Moteab beat Zesco goalkeeper Jacob Banda with low shot and ultimately, the two teams shared the spoils.
