Senegal defeated Cape Verde 2-0 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualification (CAF) Group D match at the Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde on Saturday.

As a result, Senegal move to the top of the group standings, while Cape Verde are placed third on the table.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha and Senegal shot-stopper Khadim Ndiaye were both called into action in the first few minutes of the game.

Vozinha made a comfortable save from Idrissa Gueye's free-kick, before Ndiaye pulled off a great save to deny Garry Rodrigues.

Senegal striker Diafra Sakho then tried to beat Vozinha from range, but the West Ham United player's effort went over the crossbar.

Caper Verde captain Marco Soares and Senegal striker Balde Keita Diao both had their long range shots saved by Ndiaye and Vozinha respectively.

The two WAFU teams were locked at 0-0 during the half-time break in Praia, the capital city of Cape Verde.

Vozinha had to produce two good saves to deny Papa Ndiaye and Diao after the restart as Senegal searched for the opening goal.

Cape Verde coach Lucio Antunes reacted by introducing Nuno Rocha, who inspired his nation to a 2-1 home win over South Africa last month, in the 65th minute.

However, the visitors continued to dominate the match and they scored through Diafra Sakho, who beat Vozinha from close range in the 82nd minute to making it 1-0 to Senegal.

Senegal's 2-0 victory was sealed by second-half substitute Cheikh Ndoye, who netted with a long range effort in stoppage-time.
