Mon June 12, 09:31

Algeria overcame Togo 1-0 in their first 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification Group D match at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida on Sunday.

The victory took the Desert Foxes to the top of the Group D standings, while the Sparrow Hawks are placed third on the table.

The Sparrow Hawks threatened first 16 minutes into the encounter following a mistake by Desert Foxes goalkeeper Rais M'Bolhi.

However, Ramy Bensebaini came to Algeria's rescue as he made a goal-line clearance as the visitors looked to break the deadlock.

Togo keeper Djeri Bassa was then called into action by Algeria striker Slimani, whose effort was stopped by the goal-minder as the hosts pressed the Sparrow Hawks.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 24th minute and it was Sofiane Hanni, who lobbed the ball over Bassa to make it 1-0 to Algeria.

The score was 1-0 to Algeria during the half-time following a tightly contested first-half in the city of Blida.

The Sparrow Hawks started brightly in the second-half, but they struggled to penetrate the Desert Hawks defence that was led by Aissa Mandi.

Togo captain Emmanuel Adebayor had a chance to level matters for his side, but his effort narrowly missed the target as the visitors pressed Algeria.

Nevertheless, the match ended 1-0 to Algeria, who contained Togo until the match referee Joshua Bondo from Botswana blew the final whistle.
