Mauritania stunned Botswana 1-0 in the first 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification Group I match at the Francistown Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

As a result, Les Mourabitones are placed at the top of Group I standings with three points, while the Zebras are placed fourth without a single point.

The Zebras of Botswana enjoyed more possession in the early stages of the opening match of Group I.

However, the Botswana attack which was led by Omaatla Kebatho was struggling to penetrate the Mauritania defence.

Mauritania goalkeeper Brahim Souleymane was beaten just before the 30th minute by Mogakolodi Ngele's free-kick.

But fortunately for the Les Mourabitones, the ball hit the crossbar with 30-year-old shot-stopper stunned.

Botswana and Mauritania were locked at 0-0 during the half-time break in city of Francistown.

The hosts had to find a way to penetrate the Mauritania defence and break the deadlock in the second-half.

Promising forward Thatayaone Kgamanyane was introduced by the Zebras technical team just after the hour-mark.

However, it was the visitors who grabbed a late winner through Mohamed Abdellahi, who scored in the 78th minte and Mauritania ran out 1-0 winners.
