Zambian side Zanaco earned their first win in the group stages of the CAF Champions League after beating Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca 1-0 in a Group D match at the Heroes National Stadium in Lusaka on Wednesday.
The win sees Zanaco up to second in Group D on four points, the same as Al Ahly but with an inferior goal difference.
The loss sees Wydad Casablanca drop to third on the standings with three points while Coton Sport de Garoua are last in Group D with zero points.
The home side started the better of the two teams and managed to score the only goal of the game in the 13th minute courtesy of a strike from Ernest Mbewe, 1-0.
Zanaco suffered a bit of a setback on the half hour mark when striker Kwame Attram had to leave the field injured and was replaced by Kennedy Musonda.
Wydad Casablanca enjoyed the better part of play in the last 15 minutes of the half, but could not find the equaliser before the break.
The second half saw both sides producing poor play in the final third of the field, with neither side able to penetrate the other’s defence.
In the end Zanaco defended stoically to hold on for their first win of the group stages.
Zanaco are next in action in the Champions League on June 2 at home to Coton Sport de Garoua while Wydad Casablanca are away to Al Ahly on the same day.
