Wydad back in contention after downing Al Ahly

Wydad Casablanca have put themselves back into quarterfinal contention in the CAF Champions League after a 2-0 win over Al Ahly in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The Group D match at Stade Mohamed V saw Wydad claim revenge for their 2-0 defeat in Alexandria at the hands of Ahly earlier this month and hand the Egyptian giants their first loss of the season.

After a goalless first half, Wydad claimed the lead three minutes after the restart when Fabrice Ondama capitalised on an error by defender Ahmed Hegazy to slot the ball past goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy.

And on 77 minutes the Moroccan club doubled their lead when Mohamed Ounajem’s cross was headed home by substitute Walid El Karti.

The result sees Wydad remain in third place, but they are now on six points and breathing down the necks of Al Ahly, who remain top on seven points.

Second-placed Zanaco (also on seven points) can claim outright leadership of the group if they defeat Coton Sport in Cameroon later today.
