Zambia national team coach Wedson Nyirenda says he is not under pressure to reach the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The former Chipolopolo striker says he is not mandated to qualify the team to the World Cup, but to build a new team.

Nyirenda has also stated that he will not resign even if the Zambia national soccer team fails to qualify to the 2018 Russia World Cup as it is not his prime target.

Responding to a question on what his targets are now that he has been confirmed as national team coach, 'Wada' said his focus is to build a team as Zambia was currently at its lowest.

“The prime objective is to build the new team with a goal of qualifying for the world cup. I will not lose my job if we did not qualify for the world cup,” Nyirenda said.

“Building a new team could even take three years. Qualifying to the World Cup will be a bonus, but we will qualify as we have 12 points to fight for.”

With Zambia’s next competitive game scheduled for August, Nyirenda said he is targeting to play at least three friendly international games on the two upcoming FIFA days.

Zambia lie in third position on the log in the World Cup qualifying group after losing to Nigeria at home drawing away against Cameroon.
