The much-advertised Victor Ezeji Testimonial billed for Port Harcourt on Saturday has suffered a major financial blow after the Rivers State Governor failed to fulfill a promise he will support the game with 15 million Naira.
Last month, Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike made a personal promise of 15 million Naira to Victor Ezeji.
However, the organisers have now only received five million from the Governor via the Rivers State sports commissioner Boma Iyaye and the massive shortfall has now meant the game will not be beamed live by pay TV channel SuperSport.
The durable Ezeji played for 20 years in the Nigeria league and will celebrate his milestone with Saturday’s match.
“The organisers of the testimonial are in a tight corner after only five million Naira was received from the government,” a top source informed.
“This money cannot cover a live telecast of the match by SuperSport.
“It will also affect adversely the accommodation of guest-players and publicity for the match.”
It was understood that former Super Eagles star Joseph Yobo received 200 million Naira from the Rivers State Government to organize his own testimonial in May 2016.
