Rivers United coach Stanley Eguma has said he is excited to take on Enyimba in a test game in Calabar today as clubs step up build-up for the kick-off for the new NPFL season.
‘The Pride of Rivers’ go toe-to-toe against the two-time African club champions at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar in their final pre-season friendly before the 2016/17 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season kicks off on Saturday.
Eguma said facing the ‘People’s Elephant’ away from Port Harcourt will give him a good idea about the state of his side to navigate what seems a rigorous season.
“Enyimba are one of the strongest teams in the land and to play against them is a very good thing,” he said.
“We can judge the level we are at and continue to make corrections in mistakes that are noticed.
“Hopefully, we will be ready by the time we face El Kanemi Warriors in our first game of the season on Sunday.”
Eguma also discussed the impact of his side’s 1-0 loss to Abia Warriors in their last tune up game on Saturday, January 7.
The trainer said the reverse have not dampened morale in the group, calling it “a blessing in disguise”.
“We played very well and dominated the game especially in the second half,” he said.
“We missed so many chances including a penalty and we also hit the post.
“The main objectives for these matches is not to win, but to identify areas of weaknesses with the aim to correct them.”
