Ivory Coast international Salomon Kalou believes that they have the quality to defend their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

This year's prestigious continental tournament is set to take place in Gabon and the finals will run from January 14 to February 5.

Hertha Berlin forward Kalou played an important as the Elephants went all the way to clinch the 2015 AFCON title in Equatorial Guinea.

The 31-year-old, who is the most experienced player in the current Ivory Coast squad, discussed their road to the final where they beat Ghana 9-8 on spot-kicks following a goalless draw.

“We also battled in the previous qualifiers, losing heavily in Cameroon and also failing at home to the Democratic Republic of Congo," Kalou told The Guardian.

“But by the time we got to the knockout stage of the finals in Equatorial Guinea, we were producing outstanding football and scored three goals each in victories over Algeria and DR Congo.

“The final against Ghana was a tight, tense affair and our experience and calmness shone through in the post-match penalties shootout.”

“To win the Cup of Nations you must have plenty of quality in your squad, and we do," he concluded.

The Elephants are in Group C along with Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Morocco as well as Togo.
