England-based striker Wilfried Zaha is glad to have been part of the Cote d’Ivoire team at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
“Although we failed to make it to the next stage of the competition, I am happy playing in my first Afcon,” said the Crystal Palace player in the English Premier League.
The defending champions, Cote d’Ivoire were ejected from the competition after they lost 1-0 to Morocco in a Group C match played on Tuesday at the Oyem Stadium.
Zaha, who made two substitute appearances for England in friendly fixtures but eventually accepted to play for Cote d’Ivoire starting early this year, said that being part of the team is great.
“The start has been tough, but I look forward to many more years playing for the national team,” said Zaha.
The player had grown disillusioned with a lack of opportunities with England before he switched to play for the 2015 Afcon champions.
In his five appearances for Cote d'Ivoire, Zaha scored one goal in the 3-0 win over Uganda in an international friendly in UAE early this month.
Zaha left Abidjan with his family at the age of four to move to south London.
