An inability to defend from set pieces cost Ghana dearly at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, according to outgoing coach Avram Grant.
The Black Stars were knocked out of contention at the semfinal stage with a 2-0 loss to Cameroon and the first goal arrived from a poorly-defended free kick. They also conceded from a free kick in the third-place playoff loss to Burkina Faso.
“The set pieces really cost us. In the Egypt game we conceded, in the Cameroon game, we also conceded in the Burkina Faso game,” the outgoing Black Stars boss said.
“We could have avoided the set pieces, especially where they happened and that would have changed our story.
“The team showed great promise in the tournament, it’s a young team and has a great future.”
