Newcastle United are back on top of the Championship table after a 2-1 win away to Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday which was inspired by Ghana’s Christian Atsu.
Atsu, making his second start since returning from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, played a hand in both of Newcastle’s goal as they returned to the top of the log and put themselves in line for a return to the Premier League.
The Magpies found themselves 1-0 down 14 minutes into the game when Glenn Murray converted a penalty kick.
And Rafael Benitez’s side had to wait until the 81st minute to level the game, with a fortuitous strike from Atsu which hit the boot of teammate Mohamed Diame and looped into the goal. The Senegalese was credited with the goal.
There was no luck about United’s winner in the 89th minute, with Atsu providing a peach of a cross for Ayoze Perez to convert and hand the Magpies a crucial win in Brighton.
Atsu was named Man of the Match for his input, with the win taking Newcastle United two points clear of Brighton at the top of the log.
