A busy day in South Africa’s Nedbank Cup – which saw 16 goals scored across six matches – was headlined by Kaizer Chiefs’ victory against Stellenbosch FC.
The Soweto giants claimed a 3-0 win over National First Division side Stellenbosch FC in one of two night matches. Though they worthy winners, the score line doesn’t reflect how hard Chiefs had to work for the victory, with the Cape side probably the better team in the first half of the game.
However, a strong second half showing with goals from Joseph Molangoane, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Gustavo Paez saw the Amakhosi secure safe passage into the next round of the cup competition.
The afternoon games saw top flight sides Bloemfontein Celtic and Baroka FC claim 2-0 away wins in challenging matches against lower league opponents Buya Msuthu and FC Cape Town respectively, while Jomo Cosmos were perhaps the most impressive team in action as they easily overcome United Rovers 3-0.
Sadly the same could not be said of Ajax Cape Town, whose poor season continued with a shock exit at the hands of ABC Motsepe KwaZulu-Natal side Kwadukuza United. The Urban Warriors twice led at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium, but after 120 minutes the match ended 2-2 and the minnows won out 4-3 on penalties to record the 2017 edition’s first major upset.
At the same time that Chiefs were defeating Stellenbosch, Free State Stars overcame Highlands Park 2-0 in the only all-PSL tie to be played so far. Ea Lla Koto claimed a deserved win against a mostly second-string Lions of the North thanks to goals from Nhlanhla Vilakazi and Goodman Dlamini.
There will be four further last 32 ties played on Sunday: Golden Arrows v Maritzburg United, EC Bees v Orlando Pirates, Acornbush United v Cape Town City and Days FC v Mbombela United.
