All four top flight sides survived tough tests against lower-league opponents on Wednesday night to complete the last 32 round of South Africa’s Nedbank Cup.
In the ‘Mother City’, hosts Cape Town All Stars put up a brave fight against Bidvest Wits, but a brace of goals early in the second half from Mogakolodi Ngele saw the visitors to a deserved victory.
Chippa United had to work hard for their 1-0 win over Witbank Spurs in Port Elizabeth – secured by a goal from striker Lerato Manzini – while the same could be said of SuperSport United’s 2-1 victory over Royal Eagles in Pietermaritzburg.
Matsatsantsa’s winning goal was scored by Jeremy Brockie, while Eagles had a superb free kick strike from former Bafana Bafana striker Katlego Mphela controversially ruled out.
The match of the evening took place at the Moruleng Stadium, with Platinum Stars coming from a goal down to claim a thrilling 3-2 win over AmaZulu. Dikwena’s winning goal was scored by substitute Henrico Botes in the dying minutes of the game.
Wednesday’s four winners join Mamelodi Sundowns, Polokwane City, Baroka FC, Jomo Cosmos, Bloemfontein Celtic, KwaDukuza United, Free State Stars, Kaizer Chiefs, Mbombela United, Orlando Pirates, Acornbush United and Golden Arrows in the last 16. The draw for the next round will take place in Randburg on Thursday night.
