SuperSport United have confirmed that their coach Stuart Baxter will be in talks with the South African Football Association (SAFA) regarding the Bafana Bafana coaching job.
The 63-year-old English tactician, who coached Bafana between 2004 and 2005, has been linked with the job since February, 2016.
The South African Absa Premiership club SuperSport have since announced that they have given SAFA permission to negotiate with Baxter.
SuperSport released the following statement about the two-time Absa Premiership winning coach on Thursday:
"SuperSport United FC has given permission to The South African Football Association (SAFA) to engage their Head Coach Stuart Baxter with a view to him becoming the Head Coach of Bafana Bafana.
"If negotiations between SAFA and Mr Baxter are successful, and SuperSport United and SAFA agree on an early termination of Mr. Baxter's current contract, such appointment would only be effective at the end of the current PSL season, officially commencing 1 July 2017," a statement read.
Under Baxter's guidance, SuperSport are current challenging for this season's Absa Premiership title and they are also competing in the Nedbank Cup and CAF Confederation Cup.
Bafana are scheduled to take part in the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN), 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers later this year.
