Following the retirement of the Uganda Cranes skipper Geofrey Massa, the national coach Milutin Sredojevic has announced that goalkeeper Denis Onyango will take over as captain.

The Mamelodi Sundowns net minder is seen as a perfect replacement as he has experience in continental football, having helped the Brazilians to their maiden CAF Champions League crown.

Resulting from their African glory, the Cranes number one was voted as 2016 CAF Goalkeeper of the Year based in the continent.

Furthermore, the announcement comes after Massa broke the news of his retirement in the national side last Wednesday.

Kawowo reports that the former Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United keeper served as Massa's vice skipper and is the man to take the Cranes forward.

“Naturally, after Massa, it was Onyango. He (Dennis Onyango) is the new captain because of his experience and leadership abilities,” said the coach to Kawowo Sports website.

Onyango is expected to lead the side in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers as well as the 2019 CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers en route to Cameroon.

The role comes after he once captained the Cranes during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ghana in Tamale last October. Hassan Wasswa Mawanda will become Onyango's deputy.
