Riyad Mahrez and Thomas Partey are set to highlight Africa’s representation when the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals continue tonight.
The pick of this evening’s matches is undoubtedly the meeting of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena, but sadly there will almost certainly be no African involvement. The Spanish side do have defender Achraf Hakimi (who is of Moroccan descent) in their squad, but he is highly unlikely to feature.
However, the other match between Atletico Madrid and Leicester City at Estadio Vicente Calderon is sure to have several major African stars on show.
The Spanish hosts can call upon Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey (who made a substitute appearance in the 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in the derby this past weekend), while the visiting Foxes have a whole host of this continent’s players.
Algerian attacking duo Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani will be in the thoughts of coach Craig Shakespeare, as will Nigerians Ahmed Musa and Wilfred Ndidi, as well as Ghana’s Daniel Amartey.
The English champions will be aiming for a positive result to take back to the King Power Stadium next week, though the likes of Mahrez, Slimani and Musa may find the going tough against Diego Simeone’s defensive-minded side.
The return leg matches for tonight’s ties will be held next Tuesday, 18 April.
Meanwhile, the postponed match between Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's Borussia Dortmund and Monaco will be played at 18h45.
