AfricanFootball reviews Saturday’s Absa Premiership action, which saw Kaizer Chiefs move level with Cape Town City at the top of the log.
Chiefs find themselves level on points (and goal difference) at the top of the table with CTC (who hold the number one spot thanks to a greater number of goals scored) after they defeated Chippa United 1-0 at Mbombela Stadium.
The early evening match looked to be headed to a dour stalemate, but five minutes from the end of regulation time substitute George Lebese provided a fine finish to win the game for the Amakhosi and further entrench them in the exciting title race.
Orlando Pirates’ clash at Makhulong Stadium against Highlands Park followed soon afterwards, but the Buccaneers weren’t able to match their rival’s result as they were held 0-0 by the Lions of the North, who moved off the foot of the table thanks to the point garnered.
The weekend’s action began with Maritzburg United handing Baroka FC a 3-1 defeat at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday evening, with Kwanda Mngonyama, Mohau Mokate and Bevan Fransman netting for the Team of Choice.
Saturday’s first game saw Ajax Cape Town claim a valuable away point in their fight against relegation, as they drew 1-1 at Golden Arrows. Abafana Bes’thende went ahead early through Nkanyiso Mngwengwe, but the Urban Warriors struck back late on with a goal from Prince Nxumalo.
The weekend’s action will wrap up with one match on Sunday: Free State Stars welcome champions Mamelodi Sundowns to the James Motlatsi Stadium at 15h00 CAT.
