Liverpool are set to rival Chelsea in a race to sign Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli, according to the Daily Mail.
The Teranga Lions player has made a name for himself as one of the best defenders in Italian football since joining from Genk in 2014.
He was strongly linked with a move to Chelsea last year, though even strong interest from manager Antonio Conte was not enough to bring the 25-year-old to Stamford Bridge.
The Blues remain keen on signing the defender, but Liverpool are hoping to compete for his services in the transfer market.
To that end they are set to sell French defender Mamadou Sakho, who has fallen out of favour at Anfield.
Sakho has gone on loan at Crystal Palace and his impressive performances for the club have attracted interest in the transfer market.
Italian side Roma have reportedly expressed an interest in signing the player, with the Reds hoping to earn 30-million pounds from his sale.
This fee would then contribute towards bidding for Koulibaly, who would cost approximately twice as much.
