In the wake of their failure to defend their Absa Premiership title, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has congratulated the new 2016/17 champions, Bidvest Wits.
Speaking after their 2-2 draw against Maritzburg United on Wednesday night at Lucas Moripe Stadium, 'Jingles' said they cannot win every trophy on offer.
The Brazilians needed a win over the Team of Choice to keep their title defence hopes alive, yet they drew their third consecutive league tie at home.
ONYANGO AND RUSIKE GOALS NOT ENOUGH TO DOWN BRAZILIANS
Following the draw, Gavin Hunt's men were crowned the new league champions as they defeated Polokwane City 2-0 in Braamfontein.
“The title wasn’t meant for us. We have to accept it,” Mosimane told the SuperSport TV Crew.
“And you’ve got to congratulate Bidvest Wits. They’ve done very well, they deserve the trophy.
“You know, we’ve got seven titles, so it’s about football, it’s like that. That’s how Barcelona or Real Madrid will feel in the last match as well, one of them will be feeling like that after the last match of the Spanish La Liga season. But it’s okay
"The second goal was very important for us, to keep us alive for second position for CAF Champions League, so it’s okay, you’ve got to accept it.
“They deserve it, Wits deserve it. They fought. It was never for us, we never really held on to it [the league lead] for more than three days.
“What makes me most happy is the fans - they were singing the whole way. Unbelievable. They understand you can’t win everything.”
The African champions will be travelling to Congo in their CAF Champions League second Group C clash against AS Vita next Wednesday.
However, they will come back and wrap their league campaign against Highlands Park on Saturday, 27 May at Makhulong Stadium.
