Despite his efforts to help Mamelodi Sundowns retain the Absa Premiership, midfielder Teko Modise has congratulated new champions Bidvest Wits.
Sundowns were dethroned as league champions by the Clever Boys after their 2-2 draw against Maritzburg United last week.
In the other match at Bidvest Stadium on the same night, Gavin Hunt's men defeated Polokwane City 3-0 to lift their maiden league crown since the club's formation.
However, to the 'General', the Brazilians should have won the title a long time ago as Modise believes they had chances to secure it.
"We should have won the league a long time ago. We had opportunities to be on top, to open a gap but we couldn't," Modise is quoted by the Sowetan website.
"Of course, it's difficult to accept, because we wanted to win. But I have to be professional enough and congratulate Wits for their persistence all these years.
"They have always challenged to win the league by featuring in the top three several times."
Meanwhile, Pitso Mosimane''s men will now hope to retain their CAF Champions League title as they are engaged in the group stages.
Coming back to the league, Sundowns will meet the relegation-threatened Highlands Park on Saturday at Makhulong Stadium as they wrap up their 2016/17 league campaign.
