Angola’s Recreativo Libolo qualified for the knockout stages of the CAF Confederations Cup after playing to a goalless draw in their final Group C game against Egypt’s Smouha at the Estado de Calulu on Sunday.
On July 7, FIFA suspended the Sudan Football Association. As a result, Sudanese clubs could not continue to participate in international competitions and Hilal Al Ubayyid were disqualified from Group C.
However, since Hilal Al Ubayyid have played at least half of their group matches, their remaining matches were awarded 3–0 wins to their opponents.
That means Zambia’s Zesco United finished top of Group C with ten points, followed by Recreativo Libolo in second place with seven points after Sunday’s result in Luanda.
Smouha missed out on the knockout stages after finishing third in the group with six points.
The match itself on Sunday at the Estado de Calulu produced very little in terms of goalmouth action.
Both Recreativo Libolo and Smouha were poor in the final third, often gifting possession back to their opponents with bad decision making or sloppy passing.
Recreativo Libolo, however, seemed content to sit back in defence and protect the draw which saw them into the quarterfinals of the CAF Confed Cup.
Smouha, on the other hand, showed little threat in attack, but did push huge numbers forward in search of a goal in the final twenty minutes of the game.
Recreativo Libolo, though, managed to defend stoutly and hold out for the goalless draw.
The Angolan side will now face TP Mazembe in the quarterfinals of the completion while Zesco United will take on SuperSport United. The quarterfinals will take place over the weekend 8-10 September.
