South African duo Kamohelo Mokotjo and Thulani Serero suffered defeat in their respective official debuts for their new clubs on Saturday.
Mokotjo, who completed a move to Championship side Brentford from FC Twente in the current transfer window, started for The Bees in a 1-0 loss to Sheffield United.
United scored the only goal of the game in the 39th minute as Mokotjo's troops left Bramall Lane without a point.
Serero, who in turn completed a move to Vitesse from Dutch rivals Ajax Amsterdam, played from start to finish as his new club lost on penalties in the Johan Cruyff Shield to Feyenoord.
In a game that marks the start of the new season, Vitesse - who won their first piece of top flight silverware in their history last season - suffered a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat.
The game ended at 1-1 after regular time.
