Arsenal star Mohamed Elneny says winning the FA Community Shield trophy has given them the momentum going into the new season.
The midfielder played the entire match as Arsenal clinched the 2017/18 FA Community Shield trophy after defeating Chelsea 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in London on Sunday.
When speaking to beIN SPORTS after the match which was played at the Wembley Stadium, Elneny stated that he had a point to prove heading into the clash against the reigning EPL champions.
“Winning the Community Shield gives us momentum ahead of the new season. We [players] talked about the importance of winning this game,” Elneny said.
“There has been a lot of criticism recently and I wanted to prove that I deserve to play for a big team like Arsenal. That was my best game for Arsenal,” he added.
The 25-year-old player, who can also play as a central defender, has refuted claims he could be leaving the Gunners of London saying: “I am staying at Arsenal this season.”
Elneny has been repeatedly linked with a possible transfer to EPL outfit Leicester City during the Transfer Window and it remains to be seen whether Arsenal will consider selling him soon.
Arsenal are now preparing for their first 2017/18 league encounter which is against Leicester at the Emirates Stadium in London on Friday.
