In the wake of reports that thugs attacked Alex Ng’onga's home over the weekend, Zambia coach Wedson Nyirenda has come out in support of the Chipolopolo striker.

The Football Association of Zambia and Nyirenda have rallied behind striker following a spate of attacks against him and his family with allegations that he missed a goal against Nigeria on Saturday.

The incident followed the 1-0 Chipolopolo loss to the Super Eagles in their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo.

“Ng’onga had the best game in Nigeria. From yesterday he has not rested people wanting to get pictures with him, you come back home he’s an enemy of the state,” Nyirenda said to Lusaka Times.

“What kind of people are we?.”

Meanwhile, FAZ spokesperson Desmond Katongo said the perpetrators were enemies of football and lamented the attack.

“FAZ wishes to warn football fans that it will not hesitate to ban fans who exhibit unruly behaviour that puts the name of the game into disrepute,” Katongo added.

“The attacks on Ng’onga’s house are unacceptable. Football is not a sport for hooligans, but a game that unites and entertains all Zambians.

“This action is a dent on the image of the Association, and the game and clearly sends a wrong message to all players and the community at large.”
