Maritzburg United narrowly survived relegation from the Absa Premiership on the last day of the 2015/16 campaign - finishing 14th on the league table.

The Team of Choice made coaching changes three times during the campaign. Mandla Ncikazi was in charge of the team at the beginning of the season.

However, Ncikazi was sacked in September and replaced by veteran coach Clive Barker. The former Bafana Bafana and Bidvest Wits coach was also fired three months later.

German coach Ernst Middendorp was then appointed Maritzburg head coach for the third time. He battled relegation with Ea Lla Koto and ultimately, they survived.
T
he club overhauled their squad at the end of the season. Mohammed Anas, Tawfeeq Sallie, Khumbulani Banda, David Booysen, Thamsanqa Mkhize and Menzi Chili were all released.

A month before the 2016/17 season, Maritzburg announced the signing of 10 new players. Experienced trio Andrea Fileccia, Bevan Fransman, Bryce Moon headlined the club's new arrivals.

Dennis Wieldiech, Devon Saal, Themba Shabalala, Blessing Moyo as well as Bongani Mpande were also unveiled by the Pietermaritzburg side.
