Eq. Guinea

Equatorial Guinea’s national football team is known by the nickname ‘Nzalang Nacional’. They have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, only attempting to do so from the 2002 finals onwards.

The national team have never appeared at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations either, though they will make their debut in the continental championship in the year 2012 as co-hosts of the tournament along with Gabon. Equatorial Guinea won the 2006 CEMAC Cup.

Nzalang Nacional are coached by Paraguayan Carlos Diarte and play their home games at the Nuevo Estadio de Malabo. Presently they have a large number of Spanish-based players who have Equatoguinean heritage, which has led to an improvement in their results.

The country’s top flight football division is known as the Equatoguinean Premier League. It was formed in 1979 and presently features ten clubs.

The reigning champions are Akonangui FC, who won their fourth title in 2008. Top of the pile is CD Ela Nguema from Malabo, who have won the domestic championship 11 times, though their last success came in 2002. Renacimiento FC have four titles to their name (all between 2004 and 2007).
