Cape Town City FC

Cape Town City will be playing in just their second MTN8, having made their debut as a brand new club last year.

The Citizens benefitted from the top eight finish of their predecessors Black Aces, but proved that they were more than worthy of a place in the MTN8 by upsetting ‘Cup Kings’ Kaizer Chiefs in the quarterfinals.

They were then outclassed by the eventual champions (both of the MTN8 and the PSL) Bidvest Wits in the semifinals, but their campaign still signalled a positive start for Eric Tinkler’s charges, who went on to win the Telkom Knockout and finish an impressive third on the league table in the remainder of the season.

Tinkler is no longer with the club (having moved to SuperSport United) and former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy has taken the reins.

The first real test of the new coach’s tenure will be in whether he can oversee a bid for the MTN8 title and Cape Town City’s second piece of silverware.
