By most clubs standards, Sundowns had a pretty successful campaign, brushing off a slow start to climb up the league table and challenge SuperSport United for the title. Sadly, in the end the league title proved one hurdle too far as Downs stuttered in the last few weeks of the season.
Nonetheless, their second place finish in the league has made them eligible to challenge for the MTN8 title in 2010, a competition they were absent from the previous season. This time round they will look to make up for missing the cup completion last year.
For a club of Sundowns ambition the feeling was from inside the camp was that they were extremely disappointed with second place in the league and they will look at the MTN8 as way in which to show their fans they mean business in the 2010/11 PSL season
The Brazilians had an excellent goal-scoring record, although a large portion of their 43 goals were scored by one man in Katlego Mphela who netted 17 goals. His partner up front in former Ajax striker Mabuthi Khenyezas was poor as he scored only four goals.
The likes of Bennedict Vilakazi, Surprise Moriri and Lerato Chabangu (the latter two both having major injury setbacks) did also not contribute much; perhaps if they had, Sundowns could have had a better chance of going all the way in the Absa Premiership, something they hope to achieve in this years MTN8 competition.
Their defensive record, with Brian Baloyi in top form and the young centre back Siyanda Xulu one of the finds of the season, was also good. Downs only conceded 24 goals in their 30 games and will prove difficult to break down at the back once again.
Sundowns will be eager to do well in this years MTN8 especially considering their rich heritage in the competition having appeared in eight finals and winning three times.
