The Mali national football team is better known as the Les Aigles (The Eagles) and they have never qualified for the World Cup finals in their history despite their association having affiliated with FIFA as far back as 1962.
Despite only playing their first World Cup qualifier in 2000, the Les Aigles boast a proud and colourful history with their class of 1972 that consisted of star players like Kidian Diallo, Salif Keita, Fantamady Keita and Bako Toure who only lost 3-2 to Congo in the CAF Cup of Nations final.
By November 2009, Mali were sitting 51st on the FIFA World rankings while their highest position was a commendable 35th which was achieved in March 2007 and their lowest was way back in 2000 where they found themselves perched 117.
After a series of poor results in the eighties and nineties, they re-emerged as a significant force in African football in 2002 when they hosted the 23rd edition of the Cup of Nations where they finished fourth behind Nigeria, Senegal and champions Cameroon.
They also qualified for the Cup of Nations in 2004 in Tunisia, where they again finished fourth behind Nigeria, Morocco and champions Tunisia, but they failed to qualify for the African football showpiece in Egypt two years later and they only managed the first round in 2008 in Ghana.
Some of their current top players include Seydou Keita and Mohamed Sissoko, who both won the UEFA Champions League with FC Barcelona and Liverpool respectively.

Frédéric Kanouté is also another notable player, who played for FC Lyon in France and West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur in England before settling at Spanish La Liga side FC Sevilla. Another player who will prove vital in their future is Real Madrid defensive midfield kingpin Mahamadou Diarra who plies his trade for Stoke City in the English Premiership.
