Namibia have never made it as far as the World Cup finals, but have twice taken part in the African Cup of Nations – in 1998 and 2008, where they faced elimination after the first round on both occasions.

Their best achievements have seen them twice end up as runners up in the Cosafa Cup. It must however be taken into consideration that the team, currently ranked 111th in the world, only entered the international fray in 1992.
Namibia, with a population under two million people, battled gamely in the 2010 World and African Cup qualifiers, but ended fourth in a group that included Guinea, Kenya and Zimbabwe. They did however manage two wins, which saw them ending level on points, but behind on goal difference to the Zimbabweans. Their leading scorer during the qualifiers was Wilko Risser, who scored three times.
Of the current national team, there is a fairly even split of players who participate in the Namibian league together with those that play in neighbouring South Africa, indeed, Namibian players have consistently moved across the border over the years and added value to the South African Premier League. There are also two German-based players – Risser and Collin Benjamin.
The local league is known as the Namibian Premier League and consists of 12 clubs. Black Africa have won the most titles (five), followed by Blue Waters (four).
