The Tanzanian national team, known as the Taifa Stars, have not achieved very much since their first ever international, back in 1945, when they lost 7-0 to Uganda. Suffice to say, Tanzania has never reached the World Cup finals, while their only appearance in the African Cup of Nations came back in 1980 and resulted in a first round exit.
Tanzania did however achieve relative success in the 2010 World and African Cup qualifiers – despite failing to qualify, they did manage eight points, thanks to two wins and two draws.

The victories came over Mauritius and the Cape Verde Islands, while a 0-0 draw in Dar Es Salaam against the mighty Cameroon was an impressive result. Jerson Tegete was the Taifa Stars’ main threat during the campaign, thanks to his three goals.
A high percentage of the Tanzanian national team play their football in their own country, participating in the Tanzanian Premier League. The league has been in existence since 1965, with the most successful clubs being Young Africans FC (17 titles) and Simba FC (formerly known as Sunderland, 16 titles).
