Al Ahly have reached an agreement with Ricardo Soares to become their new head coach on a long-term deal running through to the end of the 2023/24 season.
The Portuguese tactician had been released from his contract with Gil Vicente earlier this week and he arrived in Egypt on Wednesday to discuss terms with the Red Eagles’ hierarchy.
Soares will be officially unveiled at a press conference on Friday along with his assistants Mauricio Vaz, Raul Faria, Paulo Lobo and Pedro Guimaraes, who formed part of his backroom staff at Estadio Cidade de Barcelos.
The 47-year-old succeeds Pitso Mosimane and has big shoes to fill after the South African won five trophies during his 20-month tenure at the Al Salam Stadium, including back-to-back CAF Champions League titles in 2020 and 2021.
Sami Komsan was handed the reins on an interim basis following Mosimane’s departure on June 13 and he will remain at the club to work alongside Soares.
“Al Ahly will hold a press conference on Friday at 2:00pm at the club’s premises in Gezira to present the football team’s new coach, Ricardo Soares,” read a statement on the club’s official website.
