Mamelodi Sundowns and Pyramids FC progressed to the final of the CAF Champions League following Friday’s semi-final action.
Sundowns secured their spot after holding current holders, Al Ahly, to a 1-1 draw in a tightly contested match at the Cairo International Stadium in Egypt.
Yasser Ibrahim’s own-goal in stoppage time cancelled out Mohamed Taher’s opener and South African champions won the tie on the away goals rule following a 1-1 draw on aggregate.
At the 30 June Stadium in Egypt, Al Ahly’s local rivals, Pyramids, emerged 3-2 winners over Pirates in an enthralling encounter which produced five well-taken goals.
Fiston Mayele’s brace and Ramadan Sobhi’s headed goal earned the Egyptian side the win, winning the tie 3-2 on aggregate and advancing to the final for the first time in the club’s history.
While youngsters Relebohile Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota netted for the South African giants, who were hoping to reach the final for the first time since 2013.
Therefore, Pyramids and Sundowns will meet in the two-legged final. Sundowns – the 2016 African champions – will be at home in the first leg on 24 May before taking on Pyramids in Egypt on 1 June.
