Pirates claim Soweto Derby victory as Sundowns win again

Orlando Pirates returned to winning ways in the Betway Premiership as Mamelodi Sundowns maintained their good form in the South African elite league.

Evidence Makgopa and Relebogile Mofokeng netted as Pirates claimed a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs, who opened the scoring through Glody Lilepo in Nasrec, Johannesburg.

Despite the win in the Soweto Derby, the Buccaneers remained second in the standings, while Amakhosi remained ninth after extending their winless run to seven matches in the elite league.

Meanwhile, goals from Iqraam Rayners and Tashreeq Matthews earned Sundowns a comfortable 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Cape Town City in the Mother City on Saturday.

Therefore, Masandawana maintained their 12-point lead at the top of the standings and they now need two wins from their last four matches to successfully defend the league title.

The action started on Friday as Lebohang Nkaki cancelled out Tebogo Mashigo’s opener in a match which saw sixth-placed AmaZulu FC held to a 1-1 draw by seventh-placed Polokwane City in Durban.

On Sunday, Lindokuhle Zikhale’s second-half goal fired ten-man Richards Bay to the 11th spot following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over fifth-placed TS Galaxy in Tshwane.
