Gervinho’s masterpiece too little for Côte d’Ivoire

by Stephane DeSaintsalvy

Thu June 19, 20:27

Colombia enjoyed a 2-1 victory against Côte d’Ivoire in Brasilia on Thursday afternoon, in their second World Cup outing in Group C.

Two quickfire goals by James Rodriguez and Juan Quintero had for single answer a superb Gervinho’s successful effort, with the three goals scored within ten minutes.

Both teams started off in a very cautious manner, trying to build confidence without taking too many risks.

Colombian striker Teofilo Gutierrez had the first shot on goal of the game after six minutes without finding the target.

And three minutes later, pacey winger Cuadrado broke through in his right flank to unleash a powerful strike, which was well blocked by Ivorian veteran Didier Zokora.

Without really bossing the play at the Estadio Nacional, the South-Americans appeared however dangerous on the counter attack with the devastating pace of Rodriguez and Cuadrado, always on the look for frontman Gutierrez who had to fill the shoes of injured local star Radamel Falcao for the tournament.

But under the leadership of an impeccable Zokora, the Ivoirian defence kept the boat afloat in the 17th and 22nd minutes.

Côte d’Ivoire had their first attempt through midfielder Cheick Tioté after 25 minutes of play, but the ball flew over the cross-bar.

And Colombia had their best chance so far three minutes later, when James Rodriguez’s cross found Teo Gutierrez who missed the target from close range with only Boubacar Barry to beat.

The Elephants got more adventurous past the half-hour mark with Serge Aurier on target but without testing Colombian keeper David Ospina.

The first half ended goalless, mainly due to two very solid back lines.

Yaya Touré missed a couple of free-kick attempts at the beginning of the second stanza as the Elephants seemed set for a more attacking mood.

The Manchester City’s midfield powerhouse then moved on to perfectly chip the ball at the far post for Wilfried Bony, whose acrobatic volley went wide in the 57th minute.

It quickly became a box-to-box affair with Cuadrado hitting the woodwork from a tight angle two minutes later.

Elephants’ super sub Didier Drogba made his way in for Bony just past the hour-mark, only to witness James Rodriguez opening the score for Colombia with a powerful header off a Cuadrado’s corner kick in the 64th minute.

That was enough to send Côte d’Ivoire rushing forward in their quest of an equaliser, but on another devastating counter move, Teo Gutierrez perfectly set up substitute Juan Quintero for Colombia’s second of the afternoon in the 70th minute.

It took however only three minutes to Sabri Lamouchi’s men to narrow the gap, following a superb solo effort from Gervinho who went on to leave three defenders speechless on his left flank before finding the back of Ospina’s net.

The Elephants pushed hard in the final 15 minutes of the encounter, missing a great opportunity through Salomon Kalou who failed to convert a clever pass from Gervinho.

Very solid and organised defensively, Colombia could have even added number three in the 89th minute when Quintero almost caught Copa Barry off guard from the middle of the park.

And the four minutes of additional time were not enough for the Ivoirians to come back.

Colombia have strengthened their leadership in Group C on 6 points, three more than second-placed Côte d’Ivoire who have still a fair chance to make it to the knock-out stage on 3 points.

The duo leads pointless Greece and Japan who will be looking for a win when they meet each other in Natal later today.
