Mauritania beat visitors Equatorial Guinea 1-0 on Saturday in Nouakchott to make a bright start in their 2015 Africa Cup preliminary qualifiers.
The two sides headed into the break scoreless in their first round, first leg match played at Office du Complexe Olympique de Nouakchott.
Hosts Mauritania broke the deadlock in the 76th minute through their Tunisian-based striker Ishmael Diakite.
The two sides meet in the return leg in a fortnights time in Malabo during the weekend of May 30/June 1.
Mauritania have never qualified to the Africa Cup finals while Equatorial Guinea are chasing their second appearance after qualifying as co-hosts in 2012.
