Ten-man Guinea down Togo

by Brian Lee

Sat September 06, 00:17

First half goals from Soumah Seydouba and Idrissa Sylla saw Guinea to a 2-1 win over Togo in a Group E African Cup of Nations qualifier at the neutral ground of Casablanca, Morocco on Friday night.

Guinea finished the match with ten men after Sylla was shown a red card shortly after the break, but managed to hold on for a vital three points despite a consolation goal for Togo courtesy of Jonathan Ayite.

Guinea started the better side and opened the scoring in the 11th minute courtesy of a well-taken penalty from Seydouba, 1-0.

Guinea continued to dictate terms after that and made their pressure tell on the stroke of half time when Sylla doubled their lead with a clinical finish, 2-0.

Shortly after the restart to the second 45 Guinea were reduced to ten men when goalscorer Sylla was shown a red card for a horrible foul.

Having a man extra Togo came into the game more and managed to pull a goal back in the 58th minute thanks to a strike from Ayite, 2-1.

Togo tried to find an equaliser thereafter, but Guinea held on for the win.

The result, for the meantime, takes Guinea to the top of Group E before Ghana hosts Uganda Cranes on Saturday in Kumasi.
