Brave Ghana put Togo to the sword

Ghana put up a spirited display to beat Togo 3-2 in Lome on Wednesday for their first win in Group E of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Black Stars conceded the first goal early on in the game when Floyd Ayite burrowed into the box and slotted past goalkeeper Stephen Adams.

The Bastia forward went on a one-on-one situation and had his first effort at goal saved by Adams but the rebound came off his right foot into the gaping net.

Ayite had Emmanuel Adebayor to thank for the assist when his teed up header was chested down by the former into the box.

But Ghana were not deterred by that and nearly snatched the equalizer in the 19th minute but Andre Ayew passed the ball into the hands of the Togo goalkeeper.

The Olympique Marseille man received a pass inside the box from his younger brother Jordan Ayew inside the box but he could not smash it into the net.

Five minutes later, Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan proved his prolificacy again and out jumped his marker inside the box to apply a blistering header to Kwadwo Asamoah’s cross from the right.

In the 34th minute, midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu was left unmarked inside the box and perfectly headed in a cross from Baba Rahman to put the Black Stars ahead 2-1.

It was a deserved lead for the visitors who had controlled the midfield and using the wings effectively.

The second half saw Togo put up a stirred up performance and dictate the pace with Ghana recoiling.

The Hawks made changes and Jonathan Ayite was thrown on and he helped the home side applied some descent pressure.

They won a free kick close to the box and Ayite floated a high one for Tottenham Hotspur star Emmanuel Adebayor to prod home powerfully for the leveler in the 81st minute.

When all though Togo were going to earn a point, Ghana popped up and again and Christian Atsu picked up a lose ball from the edge of the box and powered a low grounder into the box.

Ghana have now revived their bid after an uninspiring 1-1 draw with Uganda at home last Saturday.

Togo are without a win in two matches after going down 2-1 to Guinea in Casablanca last Friday.
