Uganda inflict defeat on Ghana

by Ameenu Shardow

Sat November 15, 17:36

Ghana suffered their first defeat of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers losing 1-0 to Uganda in Kampala on Saturday.

Savio Kabugo’s headed in a cross on nine minutes to separate the two sides at the Mandela Stadium.

Uganda earned an early corner-kick from a comical corner-kick which was decently whipped in by Mike Sserumaga and headed towards the far post.

Kabugo sneaked in and directed his header to the ground which rolled into the net for the opener-which turned out to be the match winner.

An opposing player blocked Ghana goalkeeper Razak Braimah, who was playing first competitive match, in the box.

The Black Stars never gave up of bouncing back with Christian Atsu operating effectively on the left flank but his final balls could not find target man Abdul Majeed Waris, who was leading the attack.

But the Cranes were unmoved and were in-charge of the game until the first half whistle to go into the break 1-0 ahead.

Black Stars began building patiently at the back and in one of those move Braimah kicked a long one to Waris who beat his man and entered the box but shot feebly into the arms of goalkeeper Dennis Onyango.

The Trabzonspor player had Andre Ayew and Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu waiting to be fed but Waris attempted to curl past the goalkeeper but his effort was saved.

Ghana turned up the ante when Solomon Asante replaced Afriyie Acquah.

He caused problems down the right flank and on two occasions provided passes which were missed.

Three minutes after coming on, the TP Mazembe floated in a cross, which was connected by Ayew, but the rebound dropped to Waris who was late to connect from 12 yards.

Uganda climb to second place in Group E with 7 points, a point behind leaders, Ghana who can be overtaken by Togo if they beat Guinea.
