Cairo giants Zamalek claimed their first win in the group stage of the CAF Champions League, defeating North Africans rivals Al Hilal 2-1 in Cairo on Saturday.

The White Knights had begun their Group A campaign with a 2-1 defeat away to AS Vita in the DR Congo last weekend and needed a victory to put themselves back on track.

The home side opened the scoring early, with Dominique da Silva netting his first of the group stage to put Ahmed ‘Mido’ Hossam’s side 1-0 up in the sixth minute.

However, Al Hilal, who defeated TP Mazembe 1-0 last weekend, claimed an equaliser in the 25th minute through Mudather El Tahir.

The match looked destined to end all-square, but Zamalek struck a late winner. Mohamed Abdel-Shafy netted in the 81st minute to make the score 2-1.

The result sees Zamalek join Hilal and AS Vita on three points in Group A. Vita could move clear tomorrowwhen they take on DRC rivals TP Mazembe.

The next matchday fixtures on 6-8 June see Hilal host Vita, while Zamalek are away to TP Mazembe for their second trip to central Africa.
