Ssentamu’s goal sends AS Vita to semis

Ugandan striker Yunus Junior Ssentamu made sure AS Vita booked a place in the CAF Champions League semifinals when he netted the sole goal against hosts Zamalek at the Alexandria Stadium on Sunday evening.

The former SC Vipers striker in the Ugandan league scored in the 54th minute moments after the hosts had missed a scoring opportunity. The win pushes AS Vita to 10 points, second behind TP Mazembe, who have a superior goal aggregate.

New Zamalek coach and Egyptian legend Hossam Hassan failed to make a winning start with his team and is expected to come under lots of pressure from the fans.

After poor results both locally and on the international stage, Zamalek parted ways with Ahmed Hossam ‘Mido’ and hoped that bringing Hassan would change the team’s fortunes.

The five-time African Champions started well, but missed several scoring opportunities as the AS Vita defenders stood firm. On resumption, the Congolese side put lots of pressure and made sure they scored a goal and later defended in numbers.

Ssentamu’s goal will also be a big reminder for Uganda Cranes technical bench not to forget the player for their first Group E 2015 AFCON qualifier away to Ghana. The striker missed the Cranes’ recent game that they won 1-0 away to Mauritania.

AS Vita will now play their last game against TP Mazembe to decide who tops the group, while Zamalek will make a trip to Khartoum, Sudan, to face Al Hilal in a formality match.
