Kokou goal gives Togo vital win

Sat October 11, 17:23

Togos’ Sparrow Hawks have got their chances for qualification for the 2015 Afcon finals back on track after a 1-0 away win against Uganda on Saturday.

The West Africans who lost their first two games to Guinea and Ghana have now accumulated three points before they host the Cranes on Wednesday, October 15 in Lome.

Donou Kokou scored the lone goal to give the visiting Togo team a 1-0 win over hosts Uganda in a 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier played at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole on Saturday.

Kokou who had been booked earlier for a foul on Geoffrey Massa capitalized on a good cross to send a hard ground shot that beat Ugandan goalkeeper Dennis Onyango at the far post. The goal mde the Ugandan fans silent.

Togo’s skipper Emmanuel Adebayor who also features for English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur only had one shot at the Ugandan goal in the first half as he played deep behind the strikers.

Uganda had two missed chances through Kizito William Luwagga and Massa in the earlier half, while substitute Emmanuel Okwi also had a missed free kick deep in Togo’s box. Brian Umony’s appeal for a penalty later in the second half did not pay off for Uganda as well.

“We are happy to get three points away in Uganda and we shall now fight to get another three next week at home,” said Adebayor after the game.

Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic said they also have a chance to go and win away in Togo. “But we have to go back to the drawing board and see where we went wrong,” he told AfricanFootball.com.

The Cranes last qualified for the Afcon finals in 1978, while Togo have been usual participants and also participated in the 206 World Cup in Germany.
